Diabetes/Neuropathy
Acupuncture does not cure diabetes but has been proven to enhance the effects of insulin treatments, by regulating blood sugar levels. In addition, acupuncture has been known to help with weight loss, a known contributor to Type II diabetes. Lastly, it has the ability to adjust the balance of hormones that contribute to diabetes such as melatonin, insulin, and epinephrine. Recent studies of acupuncture treatments on patients with diabetes resulted in reduction in the baseline of both body weight and body mass index (BMI), improved fasting glucose levels, and fasting insulin levels combined with a reduction in fatty acids, LDL cholesterol, and an increase in HDL cholesterol. You are welcome to read about these studies here and here.
Neuropathy is explained as a pain, weakness, tingling or numbness due to the damage of nerves that travel through your hands, feet and other extremities in your body. This damage leads to burning or tingling sensations that can escalate at night causing insomnia and/or discomfort during the day, rendering it difficult at times to perform daily functions.
Acupuncture can reduce or potentially eliminate the pain resulting from neuropathy, stop further nerve degeneration, and shrink the affected area reversing damage. Typically, a patient will see partial relief either immediately or the next day, however it is imperative to follow the treatment plan provided by the practitioner for continual relief.
