what to expect

From the moment you walk in the door, you'll feel at ease. Check in for your appointment at the Front Desk, then have a glass of water or a hot cup of tea, and start feeling delightful!

If it's your first time, turn in the paperwork you filled out in advance from our forms available below. Or grab your packet from the front desk to get started. If you are here for acupuncture, make sure you've inquired about possible insurance coverage.

If you've been here before, feel free to peruse the shelves of our somewhat limited but very considered products that we have researched and chosen carefully.

Enjoy your beverage and the ambiance, take in the music, and sit back and relax before your appointment.

Now we can't guarantee quiet, undisturbed time, every time, all the time, but it is our mission, that we provide a delightful atmosphere, and you feel lighter at heart and mind as soon as you walk through our door

what to expect with acupuncture

Initial appointments/evaluations are 90 minutes for adults, and 60 minutes for children.


During the initial session your acupuncturist will observe your pulse and tongue (traditional diagnostic techniques), as well as take a thorough and comprehensive health history, and review primary complaints and concerns.

Follow up sessions are 60 minutes for adults, and 30 minutes for children.


You should wear loose clothing, no perfume or make-up preferable, and have a light snack prior to treatment. (In other words, we don't want you to be hungry during your treatment.)


The treatment- The needles


Acupuncture needles are nothing like hypodermic needles. Hypodermic needles are stiff, thick and hollow because they are designed to pull blood out or force liquid into the body. Acupuncture needles, however, are fine, thin and flexible, often no thicker than a human hair.

 

Most acupuncture patients who are nervous at first, are surprised when the needles cause little or no sensation and that treatments are quite relaxing. Patients often even fall asleep during treatment.


After your treatment

Your acupuncturists will recommend a treatment plan, and let you know when to reschedule, and how often.

what to expect with Massage

For initial appointments, we recommend at least a 60 minute session.


During the initial session, your massage therapist will review your health history and any primary complaints and concerns you have.


This is the time to talk about:

  • where does it hurt
  • what areas are bothering you
  • past massage experiences, and preferences you may have
  • any injuries
  • any other questions or concerns


With this information, your practitioner will determine the best modality ( "type of massage") for your session, based on the desired outcome and collective information form your pre-treatment evaluation.


The Treatment - the massage

Now you can lay back and relax. Let all your thoughts drift away, and enjoy. Feel free, during the massage to speak up. If an area is more sensitive than you realized, let the practitioner know. If you like even deeper work, let the practitioner know. This is the time for the therapist to become familiar with not only your preferences, but your tolerances too. At HHA we practice, what we call, outcome based massage. 


This means, it's not your "typical day at the spa". We hope it's just as relaxing! But the goal here is to make a difference in your condition, whether it's decreased pain or discomfort, increased range of motion, or to ease stress and anxiety.

Your massage therapist will recommend a treatment plan, and let you know when to reschedule, and how often.
