From "food matters"

Our bodies naturally detoxify everyday as part of a normal body process. Detoxification is one of the body's most basic automatic functions of eliminating and neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin. Unfortunately in this day and age, with the pollution found in the air, water and food we eat, our bodies have a hard time keeping up. Our chemicalized diet with too much animal protein, too much saturated and trans fats, too much caffeine and alcohol radically changes our internal ecosystem.

Body systems and organs that were once capable of cleaning out unwanted substances are now completely over-loaded to the point where toxic material remains inside our tissues. Our bodies try to protect us from dangerous substances by setting it aside, surrounding it with mucous and fat so that it will not cause an imbalance or trigger an immune response (some people carry up to 15 extra pounds of mucous that harbors this waste).

Detoxification through special cleansing diets is the best way to assist your body's natural self-cleaning system. It is especially important for immune-compromised diseases like cancer, arthritis, diabetes and chronic fatigue. However, even if your diet is good, a spring cleanse can revitalize your system and rid your body of harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites. It is a simple three step process.

My Mom was diabetic, all three of my siblings are also type 2 diabetic.  I have spent the last 5-10 years in fear of this condition.  I was prediabetic briefly off and on in recent years, got my number down with running and watching carbs (which I am learning is not as cut and dry as the medical industry has you believe!). It was incredibly difficult, and A1C has remained 5.2-5.5 range so I feel like I’m constantly teetering.  And the messages are so varied among doctors and nutritionists over the years, I've tried it all.  Nutrition and well-being have always interested me, but it's a confusing world of information.

I bought a blood sugar meter a few years ago and check it periodically.  So now to the point of this note to you -- my fasting blood sugar tends to run about 130-140, even when A1C is solidly good.  This has been the case for about 5 years now.  My primary doctor thinks it’s to do with something with my kidneys overnight.  During the day it’s always great, 90-110 after meals.

Anyhow, I have been testing my fasting glucose in the morning since the start of the detox.  It now runs about 105-106.  IN JUST 3 WEEKS.  The 130 is nowhere in site.

I cannot begin to tell you how this feels…Mom’s quality of life in her later years was tough in large part because of her not managing her diabetes at diagnosis in her late 60s.  It’s such an invisible condition at first.  My siblings were all diagnosed in their 40s-50s (I’m 47).  That all being said, 2023 was an incredibly tough year for me personally and I appreciate now more than ever all the good things in life and that includes eating good food, a huge joy of life!  And this detox has helped remind me that I can enjoy food tremendously and treat my body well.  It’s been a real eye-opening experience and I want to thank you for that.

Thanks for your support these past few weeks and taking the time to read this!

Over the summer, I had a friend recommend I try acupuncture with Natasha Baihly at Holistic Health Associates of Boonsboro to help alleviate some issues that I have been dealing with in this peri-menopausal stage of my life. After booking my appointment and setting up my new patient account online, I stumbled upon the detoxification program that was being offered at HHA in the fall. The detox program listed benefits such as weight loss, lower cholesterol, reduced aches and pains, increased energy, and improved hormonal health. I became intrigued as I suffer from anemia, bloating, puffiness, irritability, mood swings, emotional ups and downs, anxiety, fatigue, joint stiffness, and insomnia. I have never tried detoxification, and I do not suffer from any food allergies, nor do I take any prescription medications. I’m always looking for opportunities to challenge myself, so I signed up for the full detoxication program (with supplements). While I don’t consume large amounts of caffeine in my diet (one cup of coffee in the morning), I knew that would not be a problem, but giving up dairy products (especially cheese) would be tough. I was determined to follow the plan’s instructions along with the list of foods/beverages to eat and those to avoid. It wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be and although I have never tried the vegan lifestyle, I was able to get through that week without any struggles. While I did not exercise as much as I should have, I tried to stay busy with work and other events so that I would not think about all the unhealthy food that I gave up over the 21-day program.

I was fully committed and determined to make the best of the program that it had to offer by participating in the onsite meeting at the Common Market, the Zoom meetings, and the Facebook group. At the end of the program, I had lost 6 pounds. My overall health improved, and I now suffer less bloating, puffiness, stiffness, aches, and pains. My energy level has increased, my irritability and mood swings have diminished, and I noticed a slight improvement in my sleep. I don’t feel as anxious and tired as I had before the detoxification. I had bloodwork performed the Monday after the detox was over, and my cholesterol is now 177 (it was 226 when I last had it checked in March 2023). All my other numbers are good and in the recommended ranges (besides my iron level but that is a separate issue that is being monitored by my physician).
I plan to continue living a healthier lifestyle and pay closer attention to the foods I consume. I look forward to participating in future detoxification programs that HHA has to offer. Many thanks to Ryan Diener and HHA for this educational opportunity, guidance, and support on health and wellness.

If not now, when? That is how I was feeling about doing the Detox. Everyone around me had been doing the Detox and had good results. Caring family urged me to do it! This was obviously my first Detox and it kick started me to be very mindful of my eating habits and overall-health and wellness. I learned it’s never too late and boy did I learn a lot! It was just what I needed, and I am extremely grateful. All you have to do is say Yes!

If I can do the Detox, anyone can!

Before the Detox I was feeling very sluggish, putting on more weight during Covid lockdown. I was achy, tired and experiencing lots of inflammation, swelling and overall feeling blah. My current bloodwork results were not going in a good direction and it caused some concern.

On the detox I did have to really adjust what I ate, but I learned through the program with a lot of support and guidance to make those changes. I had HELP along the way from HHA and lots of team support and food ideas and recipes.
I am happy to say I have made some life long changes and am soooo happy!

I have dropped 15 pounds since startin

g the Detox and have continued those healthy foods in my everyday diet.

I sleep better (no more snoring or wheezing) my mind is sharper and I feel empowered. As a result of doing the detox I learned what foods don’t work well for me and it’s really nice not to have inflammation and swelling!
My hair is shinier, skin clearer and my nails started growing! It’s like since the Detox everything in my body started working better! I go for bloodwork in 2 weeks and am excited to see the changes for the better.

I am truly a work in progress!
I am looking forward to the Spring Detox to reinforce and learn more! I cannot Thank-you guys enough for your caring, kind guidance, knowledge and support!
